Unicaja, one of Spain’s most prominent banking institutions, has signed a major 10-year agreement with DXC Technology to overhaul its operations through artificial intelligence. This collaboration is a cornerstone of Unicaja’s 2025–2027 strategic roadmap, focused on driving innovation by improving customer engagement, tailoring financial products more precisely, and enhancing internal flexibility.
Acquisition to Strengthen In-House Expertise
As part of the agreement, DXC will acquire FK2, a subsidiary of the Unicaja Group, and integrate its expert team, specialising in banking and digital technologies. The deal, which remains subject to regulatory clearance, underscores DXC’s ongoing strategy of bolstering its sector-specific expertise through targeted acquisitions. By integrating FK2’s professionals, DXC is poised to deepen its ability to deliver customized solutions for financial institutions.
"This marks a milestone in our evolution toward a more agile and intelligent operating model, ready to face the challenges of the financial sector," said Estrella Botas, Head of Technology and Operations at Unicaja. "It's not just about incorporating technology but about transforming the way we operate to deliver better service to our customers."
Expanding Presence in the Spanish Banking Market
This partnership solidifies DXC’s growing footprint in the Spanish financial services sector. Already a technology partner to several leading Spanish banks, DXC is further cementing its role as a go-to provider for complex digital banking solutions. With over four decades of experience in financial technology, the company is leveraging its longstanding capabilities to address the sector’s shifting needs amid accelerating digital disruption.
"This partnership further strengthens our global leadership in the banking sector, where the world's leading financial institutions rely on our decades of experience and deep industry expertise," said Alfonso Garcia, Managing Director of DXC Technology, Spain & Portugal. "In Spain, we support all major banks in driving competitive advantage and navigating complex challenges. Our commitment is to deliver operational excellence and position Unicaja as a global benchmark for AI-driven business transformation."
Long-Term Deal Signals Financial and Strategic Gains
The 10-year duration of the agreement offers DXC both strategic and financial stability. Long-term transformation engagements such as this typically yield more attractive margins compared to routine IT services, owing to their intricate and high-value nature. This extended visibility into future revenues also strengthens DXC’s position in the managed services segment.
AI as a Catalyst for Banking Innovation
Central to the transformation initiative is the deployment of AI-powered tools that promise to modernize Unicaja’s legacy infrastructure. Traditional banking systems often fall short when it comes to real-time personalization and operational adaptability, areas where AI can deliver significant improvements. By embedding intelligent technologies across Unicaja’s operations, DXC aims to elevate customer experiences while streamlining internal processes.
"This partnership allows us to accelerate our transformation thanks to DXC's expertise in industrialized processes, technological capabilities, and proven success in similar agreements," said Juan Medina, Head of People, Organization, and Legal at Unicaja. "It equips the bank with new tools and capabilities to support and optimize the work of our current teams, who will remain a vital part of this new model."
A High-Value Collaboration with Future-Forward Potential
Though the financial specifics of the deal were not publicly disclosed, similar transformation programs in the banking sector often span hundreds of millions of euros over their lifetime. With its emphasis on artificial intelligence and automation, this partnership places DXC at the forefront of next-generation banking solutions. As the industry shifts toward more agile, intelligent infrastructures, DXC stands to play a pivotal role in shaping that evolution.
