Companies to explore ecosystem partnership options for shared multi-orbit 5G NTN infrastructure with standards-based open architecture.

Space42 (ADX: SPACE42), a UAE-based AI-driven SpaceTech company with a global presence, has joined forces with Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a key player in mobile satellite services (MSS) within the L- and S-band spectrum. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities in developing a 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN). This collaboration represents a significant milestone in enhancing global satellite communication capabilities, targeting the rapidly growing demand for direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity, narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT), and next-generation MSS services. Industry reports project the satellite segment of the D2D market to reach an estimated $50 billion by 2032, alongside substantial growth in enterprise and government satellite communications.

Laying the Foundation for a Multi-Orbit 5G NTN Infrastructure

In the initial phase of the partnership, Space42 and Viasat will conduct a series of jointly funded technical and commercial assessments to establish a multi-tenant, multi-orbit 5G NTN framework. This infrastructure, built on an open and standards-based architecture, will integrate L-band, S-band, and terrestrial spectrum, facilitating seamless global roaming for regional network operators. The companies are committed to implementing advanced technologies and sustainable system designs to optimize satellite networks for 5G applications. Additionally, they aim to navigate the complex regulatory landscape of international telecommunications, ensuring compliance across different jurisdictions. The initiative aligns with best practices set by the Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA), incorporating licensed MSS satellite spectrum and 3GPP-based open interoperability for smooth integration with global telecom networks.

Ali Al Hashemi, CEO, Yahsat Space Services, Space42, said: “Our collaboration with Viasat marks a transformative step in advancing global satellite connectivity through an open and scalable architecture. By fostering an ecosystem built on shared innovation, interoperability, and open standards, we are unlocking new possibilities in direct-to-device (D2D), IoT, and Mobile Satellite Services (MSS). This partnership accelerates time to market, drives cost efficiency, and ensures seamless integration with existing and future networks. Together, we are building an inclusive, future-ready infrastructure that empowers industries, governments, and communities worldwide.”

Mark Dankberg, CEO and Chairman of Viasat, said: “We firmly believe that the benefits of space are for the many, and not just the few. Our announcement today with Space42 is an important further step in our capital efficient growth strategy to build a powerful ecosystem of partners dedicated to future innovation in space based on open 5G standards and scalable architecture. In parallel with our recent agreement with ESA, our partnership with Space42 will further enable work on a next-generation infrastructure leveraging innovative designs based on 5G NTN standards, all while building on a growing coalition of public and private sector partners dedicated to keeping space secure, open and accessible for all.”

Scalable and Open Satellite Solutions for a Growing Market

A central objective of this collaboration is to create a flexible, scalable satellite architecture that promotes global cooperation across public and private sectors. Space42 and Viasat are actively engaging with strategic investment partners to enhance the entire value chain of the satellite communications industry. This initiative positions both companies at the forefront of the evolving space technology sector, unlocking new opportunities in the ever-expanding global satellite market.

Expanding Global Reach Through Industry Alliances

This announcement builds upon Viasat’s recent collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) to fast-track the development and deployment of NTN D2D systems. By leveraging MSS spectrum, this partnership aims to enhance satellite communications across Europe and beyond, reinforcing Viasat’s role in pioneering next-generation connectivity solutions.

Pioneering the Future of Global Connectivity

As key members of MSSA, Space42 and Viasat are spearheading the transformation of global mobile connectivity. Their joint efforts focus on integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks to deliver scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective connectivity solutions. By advancing D2D and IoT services, the companies are shaping a future where seamless communication is accessible to any device, anywhere in the world.
