Space42 (ADX: SPACE42), a leading UAE-based company specializing in AI-driven space technologies, has partnered with Danish software firm Gatehouse Satcom to enhance direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connectivity. The collaboration focused on integrating Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) capabilities over Space42’s L-band geostationary satellites using 3GPP Release 17-compliant technology. This breakthrough supports global interoperability and scalability, paving the way for the launch of Thuraya Direct—an innovative messaging and IoT service scheduled for commercial rollout in Q4 2025.
A Strategic Model Centred on Scalable Innovation
This project exemplifies Space42’s strategic approach: embracing open global standards early, expanding through purpose-driven innovation programs, and executing with strong, reliable partnerships. The initiative targets industries with critical connectivity needs—such as energy, agriculture, and transport—where terrestrial infrastructure alone often falls short.
“This collaboration reflects our strategy in action,” said Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Yahsat Space Services at Space42. “It is about extending the boundaries of mobile connectivity by enabling standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect via satellite in areas where terrestrial networks fall short. Through close engagement with telecom providers, we are addressing immediate market requirements and proving the viability of this technology while setting the stage for enhanced global commercialization of D2D through our future global constellation. We welcome partners across the ecosystem to join us in scaling this new frontier.”
Thuraya’s Legacy of Satellite Innovation
Thuraya, Space42’s mobile satellite services division, brings over 20 years of experience in delivering robust satellite communications to remote and challenging environments. Its ongoing innovation continues to redefine the capabilities of mobile satellite solutions. Gatehouse Satcom played a pivotal role in this initiative by providing vital expertise in 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and contributing key software components to validate messaging over geostationary links—an essential milestone for Thuraya Direct.
"It’s been a privilege to support Space42 in moving direct-to-device from promise to proof," said Jesper Noer, VP Commercial at Gatehouse Satcom. "Running 5G NB-IoT over GEO is no small feat, but our software is built for this – adaptable across constellations, compliant with global standards, and ready to support the next wave of NTN innovation. It’s that shared forward-looking mindset that makes our work with Space42 so impactful. They have a rare ability to pair long-term vision with real-world execution. This project is a perfect example."
Enabling Global Compatibility for Satellite Communications
The collaboration has demonstrated that 3GPP-compliant devices, such as smartphones and IoT sensors, can successfully interface with Space42’s satellite infrastructure. This validation confirms that Thuraya Direct will be compatible with open global standards, making it accessible to telecom operators and OEMs worldwide. With commercial deployment on track for late 2025, Space42 is now engaging telecom partners and industry stakeholders to bring this game-changing service to market.
