WeRide, a leading global player in autonomous driving technology, and Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: UBER), the largest mobility and delivery platform in the world, have officially announced a strategic partnership. This collaboration will bring WeRide’s autonomous vehicles to the Uber platform, starting with operations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Initial Launch in Abu Dhabi
The initial phase of the partnership will commence in Abu Dhabi later this year. A fleet of WeRide autonomous vehicles will be available for consumers via the Uber app. After the official launch, Uber users requesting specific rides may be given the choice to have their trip handled by one of WeRide's autonomous vehicles. Notably, this partnership does not include plans for launches in either the United States or China.
Key Signatories of the Agreement
The agreement was signed by Andrew Macdonald, Senior Vice President of Mobility & Business Operations at Uber, and Hua Zhong, Senior Vice President of WeRide. The signing ceremony was overseen by Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and WeRide’s Founder and CEO Tony Han, marking a significant moment in the partnership.
WeRide's Presence and Achievements in the UAE
WeRide is currently operating the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE, where its services are available through the TXAI app. In a significant milestone, the company was granted the UAE’s first national license for self-driving vehicles in July 2023, allowing it to test and operate autonomous vehicles on public roads nationwide.
Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide said: “We are honoured to partner with Uber to continue to bring our technology to global markets. Together, we aim to combine our collective experience and expertise to deliver much needed, affordable, sustainable and safe mobility solutions to a global audience.”
Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber said: “Uber is very excited to partner with WeRide. It’s clear that the future of mobility will be increasingly shared, electric, and autonomous, and we look forward to working with leading AV companies like WeRide to help bring the benefits of autonomous technology to cities around the world.”
