This innovative technology eliminates the need for grid connection, offering a reliable and environmentally friendly charging solution.

Emirates Transport, a leading provider of transport solutions in the UAE, has officially partnered with Al Ghandi Auto by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at the installation of a solar-powered, off-grid electric vehicle (EV) charging station at its headquarters.

This innovative partnership was unveiled during GITEX Global 2024, the largest technology event in the world, held in Dubai. It aligns perfectly with Emirates Transport's commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives.

A Groundbreaking Initiative

This marks a significant milestone for Al Ghandi Auto, as it will be their first solar-powered charging station. Once completed, this project will rank among the first off-grid solar EV charging stations in the UAE, showcasing a leap towards sustainable transport solutions.

Supporting Environmental Goals

The advanced technology embedded in this project supports the environmental objectives of Emirates Transport and contributes to the UAE’s vision of fostering a greener future. This initiative embodies a commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of transportation.

Goals of the MoU

The MoU established between Al Ghandi Auto and Emirates Transport focuses on maximizing the use of solar energy for both transport and operational needs. This collaboration aims to create a self-sustaining energy ecosystem that will significantly enhance energy resilience in the region.

Benefits of the Collaboration

By reducing reliance on external power sources, this partnership also aims to inspire the broader industry to adopt renewable energy solutions, paving the way for a more sustainable future in transportation.

Installation Progress

Installation efforts for the charging station are already in progress at the Emirates Transport head office in Dubai, demonstrating the commitment to rapid implementation of this initiative.

Technical Specifications

The single charging point will feature solar panels capable of generating up to 22KW of power, allowing it to charge a standard Chevrolet Bolt to 80% in approximately 1.5 hours.

Trial Period and Future Expansion

Manufactured by the Swiss technology company ABB, the charging station will be accessible to both staff and visitors during an initial six-month trial. A decision regarding the expansion of the station to accommodate additional charging points will be made based on the trial's outcomes.

Al Ghandi Auto's Commitment

As one of the largest automotive retail groups in the region, Al Ghandi Auto is dedicated to promoting solar EV chargers and enhancing EV charging infrastructure across the UAE. The company already provides electric vehicles and conventional EV chargers, while also seeking to expand its offerings with advanced off-grid EV charging solutions.

UAE's Vision for Electric Vehicles

As part of its ambitious strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the UAE aims to raise the proportion of electric vehicles on its roads from 3% in 2023 to 50% by 2050. A report from the International Energy Agency highlighted that the UAE ranks second in the Middle East for electric vehicle sales, underscoring the growing trend towards sustainable transportation.

Welcoming the announcement, Dominic Hagerty, Emirates Transport’s Chief Transport and Lease Officer, said: “This agreement with Al Ghandi Autos empowers operational efficiency with clean energy, setting a new standard for corporate sustainability.

“By pioneering this advanced solar-charging technology at our head office, we are demonstrating how innovative practices can lead to a more sustainable and efficient future. It means we can take the lead in reducing carbon emissions from transport and helping the UAE reach its net-zero goals.”

Buti Saeed Mohammed Al Ghandi, Managing Director of Al Ghandi Auto, said: “Al Ghandi Auto has been at the forefront of supplying electric vehicles and the most efficient methods of charging those vehicles here in the UAE.

“With the advancement of solar technologies, off-grid solar EV chargers are now a viable solution for sustainable, self-sufficient charging. We are excited to trial this technology with Emirates Transport in a partnership that shows both parties are dedicated to a sustainable future.”
