Cathay has taken a bold step in its digital evolution with the formation of Cathay Technologies, a newly launched subsidiary aimed at sharing the group’s cutting-edge digital innovations with the broader aviation sector. This move reflects Cathay’s commitment to shaping the future of air travel through technology-driven solutions.
Drawing on Decades of Aviation Expertise
With nearly 80 years of experience in the airline industry, Cathay is uniquely positioned to create impactful digital tools. Its in-house innovations are crafted not only to elevate customer and user experiences but also to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Now, through Cathay Technologies, these solutions are being packaged and offered commercially to aviation businesses worldwide, helping to drive sector-wide innovation.
Cathay Director Digital and IT Lawrence Fong said: “Cathay’s vision is to transform into a digital leader famous for our strong digital culture and capabilities, whilst keeping our people and customers at the heart of how we use technology. We are constantly seeking innovative ways to enhance our services and products, staying ahead of the curve and setting new industry standards.”
“We see Cathay Technologies as an extension of Cathay’s commitment to excellence, supported by our rich history and extensive understanding of the aviation industry, allowing us to provide unparalleled service and expertise to our solutions. With Cathay Technologies, we are reaching new levels in our efforts to support the development of innovation in the aviation industry and Hong Kong’s digital sector.”
Introducing the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF)
At the heart of Cathay Technologies’ offerings is its flagship product: the Electronic Flight Folder (EFF). Developed by Cathay’s aviation experts in 2019, the EFF has transformed how pilots manage flight information. It streamlines access to data, improves efficiency on the ground, and delivers significant cost savings by simplifying and speeding up workflows.
Trusted Across the Cathay Group
The EFF is already in active use across multiple airlines under the Cathay umbrella—including Cathay Pacific, Cathay Cargo, HK Express, and Air Hong Kong. Its proven success within the group paves the way for broader adoption as Cathay Technologies moves forward with plans to commercialise the solution across the global aviation industry.
Fostering Innovation Through Strategic Collaboration
As part of its launch strategy, Cathay Technologies has entered a key strategic alliance with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) via the Co-Acceleration Programme Fund. This initiative, announced during a launch event at HKSTP on 7 April 2025, positions Cathay Technologies as one of four cornerstone partners supporting the growth of startups in the region.
Cathay General Manager Digital Ventures and Cathay Technologies Chief Executive Officer Navin Chellaram said: “Cathay has a long-standing commitment to supporting Hong Kong’s technology ecosystem and fostering innovation and economic growth in the wider Greater Bay Area, including through our signature Cathay Hackathon and our successful graduate trainee programme.”
“To us, both tech talents and startups play a crucial role in the innovation and technology space. Cathay Technologies is pleased to collaborate with HKSTP on this landmark fund, which will empower budding startups in Hong Kong and the rest of the Greater Bay Area, further strengthening the economic growth of the region.”
Empowering Startups to Scale and Succeed
This partnership highlights Cathay’s ongoing dedication to nurturing innovation and contributing to Hong Kong’s economic development. Through this collaboration, Cathay Technologies will work closely with promising startups to explore proof-of-concept opportunities, offering not just financial backing through direct investment in the fund but also expert guidance and deep industry insights. The goal: helping these companies scale up and bring their solutions to market faster.
