Moldova Innovation Park: 7 Years of Driving Tech Growth - Contributing 5% to GDP

In the past seven years, the Moldova Innovation Technology Park (MITP) has become a key pillar of the nation's economy. Contributing a remarkable 5% to Moldova’s GDP in 2024, MITP has played a pivotal role in nurturing a thriving technology ecosystem. Established in 2018, it has transformed the country’s tech landscape, attracting over 2,130 resident companies from various sectors, including IT, research and development, and creative services.

Celebrating Success: The SUM IT UP #7 Event

MITP marked its achievements with the “SUM IT UP #7” event, commemorating its anniversary with key stakeholders from the government, the business community, and international partners. This event highlighted MITP’s impressive growth and underscored its vision for the future. It served as a celebration of the park’s success and its ongoing contributions to Moldova’s economic development.

Innovative Policies Driving Growth

The park’s success is largely attributed to its forward-thinking policies, such as a 7% single tax regime and simplified regulatory processes. These policies have attracted investments from 42 countries across five continents. Since its founding, MITP has seen a tenfold increase in IT service exports, and resident companies have contributed over MDL 6 billion (around USD 335 million) in taxes between 2018 and 2024. With its economic output, MITP has become the second-largest economic entity in Moldova, just behind the capital city of Chisinau.

We’ve extended MITP’s unique fiscal regime until 2037 because we believe the next world-changing tech solution could emerge right here. This park is not just shaping Moldova’s economy—it’s setting an example for the world.” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization Dumitru Alaiba.

MITP as a Model for Smart Economic Policy

MITP has emerged as a model for effective economic policies, fostering a thriving tech community that rivals major global hubs. The park’s ecosystem has seen significant investment, driving rapid growth and positioning it as a major contributor to Moldova’s economic transformation.

“Since 2018, more than 1,700 new companies have been created, and these numbers continue to grow each year. MITP’s successful model has provided stability and clarity for investors through our commitment to innovation, growth, and collaboration, consolidating our position as a regional hub of technological excellence”, said Marina Bzovîi, Administrator of MITP.

New Governance Structure for Greater Transparency

To further enhance transparency and collaboration, MITP is introducing a new governance structure. Starting January 1, 2025, the MITP Council will be established as a platform for dialogue between the government and MITP residents. The council will consist of nine members: four appointed by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, and five elected by MITP residents during the 2024 General Assembly. This initiative aims to align strategic priorities, promote inclusivity, and boost competitiveness both regionally and globally. The creation of the MITP Council reflects the park’s commitment to sustainable growth and innovative governance.

Looking Ahead: New Initiatives and Future Growth

To maintain its growth trajectory, MITP is launching several new initiatives, including a $300,000 grant for the next 12 months, funded by the Future Technologies Activity (FTA) through USAID, Sweden, and the UK. This funding will further enhance MITP’s global competitiveness and bolster Moldova’s tech ecosystem. Over the past two years, FTA has contributed more than $745,000 to MITP, reinforcing a shared commitment to innovation and development.
