The legal sector is being transformed by its growing adoption of predictive analytics and AI, reducing its reliance on manual processes and boosting productivity. Legal professionals’ perception of AI is becoming more positive. In 2024, LexisNexis reported that 82% of lawyers surveyed in the UK were either using or were planning to use AI in their legal practice – a sharp increase from 39% in the previous year.  

Traditionally, legal professionals used conventional statistics and their ‘gut instinct’, accumulated through years of legal practice, to formulate their litigation strategies and assess their probability of winning a case. As the legal sector becomes more open to integrating predictive analytics and AI, professionals who use these technologies are gaining an advantage through deeper insight into case data and more time to focus on the strategic aspects of legal practice.

Fortifying the lawyers’ arsenal through predictive analytics 

Predictive analytics uses advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms to analyze large amounts of data related to the particular case a lawyer or law firm is working on. By identifying various patterns and trends in the data, predictive analytics can provide new dimensions to lawyers’ litigation strategies, alerting them to any facts in the data that they might have missed.  

AI and predictive analytics-powered legal tools can help legal teams conduct psychometric analysis, allowing them to understand the personalities, behavioral tendencies, and motivations of various individuals, including opposing lawyers, judges, and witnesses. An AI model trained on an opposing lawyer's previous cases can provide insight into their negotiation styles, allowing legal teams to adapt their strategies accordingly. The same can be used on the judges assigned to a case, analyzing their decision-making patterns to estimate how likely they will rule in favor or against key motions that could be pivotal in the case's final outcome. With these additional insights, lawyers can develop persuasion strategies that are tailored to specific situations, increasing their chances of winning the case.  

Improving productivity and client service 

The practice of law involves reading and analyzing numerous documents every day, with each document containing huge amounts of data. AI's ability to process large volumes of data in a short amount of time provides a huge advantage, accomplishing in seconds or minutes what would take hours for a human.  

AI can point out inconsistencies that most humans would miss, as well as draw insights from a wide range of historical data. It makes tasks such as legal research, contract analysis, and routine clerical work much easier, allowing legal professionals to allot more time to complex issues and client relationship-building. The latter is quite important because the human touch is a huge component of the attorney-client relationship. If they have a stronger rapport with the client, lawyers can better understand the client's concerns and expectations, which are crucial in building legal strategies and in improving client satisfaction. 

As predictive analytics and AI technologies continue to evolve, the legal sector will see a significant shift in how law is practiced. Predictive analytics and AI will increasingly become commonplace in law firms of all sizes, acting as reliable tools for legal professionals. By giving legal teams more time and resources to dedicate to strategic and client-facing work, these technologies will give rise to a more innovative and more human legal sector, where legal professionals are able to better serve the interests and protect the rights of their clients.
