To empower individuals and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and embrace a greener future.

As electric vehicles (EVs) become increasingly popular, the necessity for sustainable charging solutions has never been more pressing. While ultra-fast charging stations promise quick power-ups for EV owners, they place a heavy burden on local energy grids, undermining the very sustainability goals that motivate many drivers to choose electric. PlusX Electric is at the forefront of promoting eco-friendly alternatives, advocating for slower, energy-efficient charging solutions that offer significant environmental advantages.

Hidden Costs of Ultra-Fast Charging

PlusX Electric provides a convenient service for EV owners by collecting and dropping off vehicles at ultra-fast charging stations. However, the company urges users to consider the broader implications of frequently relying on these high-speed chargers. Ultra-fast charging stations, specifically Level 3 (DC Fast Charging), allow EVs to charge in as little as 15 to 30 minutes, delivering power levels between 150 and 350 kilowatts (kW)—equivalent to the energy consumption of an entire small neighbourhood.

To illustrate the scale of energy demand:

> A large home's central air conditioning unit consumes between 2 to 5 kW.

> A standard electric water heater uses approximately 5 kW.

> A multi-story apartment building with 30 units may consume around 38 kW during peak hours.

Given this context, a single ultra-fast charger can require more energy than an entire apartment building, resulting in significant strain on local energy infrastructure. This high level of consumption can lead to power surges, necessitating costly upgrades to the grid and increasing reliance on carbon-intensive power generation to meet peak demands.

Non-Super-Fast Charging: A Sustainable Alternative

Non-super-fast charging options, such as Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, represent a more sustainable approach to EV charging by utilizing considerably less energy. These chargers are particularly suitable for everyday use at home, workplaces, or public parking areas, where time constraints are less of an issue. An added convenience is the option for delivery of charging pods directly to vehicles.

Level 1 chargers, operating at 120 volts, draw only 1.44 kW of power. They can fully charge a 50 kWh EV battery in approximately 35 hours. While this is slower, the energy consumed is similar to that of common household appliances, making it feasible to charge vehicles overnight or reach up to 80% capacity in a shorter time frame.

Level 2 chargers, utilizing a 240-volt power source, can deliver up to 19.2 kW, shortening the charging duration to around 2.5 hours. This consumption is comparable to running a few air conditioning units or electric ovens simultaneously, making it a practical choice for many EV users.

Environmental and Economic Benefits of Non-Super-Fast Charging

By promoting Level 2 charging stations, PlusX Electric aims to alleviate peak power demands and overall energy consumption associated with EV charging. The benefits of this approach are multifaceted:

One key advantage is the reduction in strain on the electricity grid. While ultra-fast chargers can cause drastic spikes in demand (200 kW or more), Level 2 chargers distribute the energy load more evenly across several hours, limiting individual charging sessions to just 19.2 kW. This balance minimizes the risk of power surges and blackouts, thereby decreasing the need for expensive grid enhancements.

Additionally, slower charging can lower the carbon footprint associated with EV use. Charging during off-peak hours, especially with renewable energy sources, enables cities to meet carbon reduction targets more effectively, drawing less energy from non-renewable sources during peak demand. From an economic standpoint, ultra-fast charging stations can consume around 30,000 kWh of electricity monthly, which is three times the energy usage of a typical gas station with a convenience store. Conversely, a well-distributed network of slower chargers can satisfy the needs of EV drivers while significantly reducing overall energy consumption, leading to lower infrastructure costs and less energy waste.

Call to Action for Sustainable Charging Solutions

PlusX Electric encourages EV owners, businesses, and municipalities to embrace non-super-fast charging stations as part of their sustainability commitments. By choosing slower charging options, drivers can decrease their carbon footprint, help stabilize local power grids, and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Furthermore, PlusX Electric urges real estate developers, shopping centres, and corporate campuses to install Level 2 chargers as standard amenities, offering eco-friendly charging solutions to employees and customers alike. Providing these sustainable options not only bolsters environmental credentials but also positions these organizations as pioneers in the transition to green energy.

Charging Towards a Sustainable Future

PlusX Electric is proud to support the community and advocate for sustainable energy solutions. The company is leading the charge in promoting eco-friendly chargers, emphasizing the significant environmental benefits of slower, more energy-efficient charging alternatives. To celebrate this commitment, PlusX is offering free EV pod charging to all drivers in Dubai until November 15th, delivering this service throughout the city.

“Our mission at PlusX Electric goes beyond providing clean energy solutions—we aim to make a positive impact on the world,” said CEO at PlusX Electric, Chintan Sareen. “By enabling energy-efficient charging for all, we are driving both environmental and social progress.”
