The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has entered into a significant loan agreement with the Government of Rwanda, securing AED 92 million (approximately US$25 million) to enhance water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant. This agreement represents a crucial step towards addressing Rwanda's water supply challenges.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

This strategic initiative underscores ADFD’s dedication to advancing global development projects in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, particularly SDG 6, which focuses on clean and sustainable water access. By fulfilling a vital need, the project directly contributes to Rwanda’s national objectives while showcasing the UAE’s leadership in promoting sustainable infrastructure worldwide.

Signing Ceremony Highlights

The agreement was formalized in a ceremony attended by high-ranking officials. His Excellency Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, signed the agreement alongside His Excellency John Mirenge, Rwanda’s Ambassador to the UAE. Both parties emphasized the importance of this collaboration in achieving mutual development goals.

H.E. Al Suwaidi said: “This agreement reflects ADFD’s commitment to financing infrastructure projects that promote economic and social progress in beneficiary countries. It also underscores our commitment to strengthening and advancing our strategic partnership with the Republic of Rwanda, contributing to the development of key sectors vital to the country’s growth.”

Advancing Water Security

The project involves expanding the water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable supply of clean water to critical areas in Rwanda. This initiative incorporates advanced technologies to enhance system efficiency and address long-standing water security challenges in the region.

H.E. John Mirenge said: “We are proud of this cooperation with Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which highlights the UAE’s steadfast efforts to promote sustainable development globally. The expansion of the water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant is a critical initiative to achieve our national objectives of providing clean water to our population and developing robust and sustainable water infrastructure to meet the needs of communities.”

Enhancing Quality of Life

The expanded water infrastructure will improve living standards for Rwandan citizens by creating employment opportunities and meeting the growing demand for clean water. "This milestone aligns with our broader development plans and national objectives of achieving universal access to clean water," remarked His Excellency Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi.

Comprehensive Water Supply Program

This water project is part of a broader program aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in Kigali’s water supply. The initiative includes constructing a state-of-the-art water treatment plant with a daily capacity of 36,000 cubic meters and extending transmission and distribution networks to critical urban areas. Such measures aim to secure Kigali’s water future and support its rapid urban growth.
