Emirates is set to unveil a distinctive capsule collection, showcasing the airline's commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility. The exclusive range, comprised of luggage, bags, and accessories, is meticulously crafted from upcycled materials sourced from retrofitted aircraft, embodying the airline's culture and dedication to sustainable practices.
The limited-edition collection, scheduled for release in 2024 at Emirates Official Stores, boasts an array of items, including suitcases, backpacks, handbags, cardholders, toiletry bags, belts, and even shoes. These unique pieces are handcrafted by Emirates tailors in a dedicated cabin workshop located at the Emirates Engineering facility in Dubai. Proceeds from the sales will be directed towards supporting children in need through the Emirates Airline Foundation. The collection will also be showcased at the Dubai Airshow in DWC, running from 13-17 November, on the Emirates stand. This extraordinary collection allows enthusiasts to own a piece of aviation history, with materials sourced from the iconic Emirates A380 and 777 aircraft. Surprising materials, such as aluminium headrests, leather from A380 onboard lounge couches, seatbelts, and even fur from the Captain's seat, have been repurposed to create these stylish items. To date, over 14,000kg of materials have been reclaimed from 16 retrofitted aircraft, with the potential to recover up to 270kg of leather and 627kg of seat fabric per retrofitted aircraft as the project progresses.
Given the bespoke nature of each piece, customers can request personalized laser engraving on select exclusive items, adding an extra layer of uniqueness. Aviation enthusiasts eager to acquire these limited-edition pieces can express their interest soon, as the collection is expected to be in high demand. The collection features high-quality materials, including pure leather from First Class Seats, seat fabrics made from 95% wool, and pure leather from Captain's seats. All fabrics undergo thorough cleaning, conditioning, and disinfection processes before being transformed into one-of-a-kind pieces. New lining and functional zippers are added to ensure the items maintain their functionality and durability.
Emirates has assigned a team of 14 tailors, officially known as Engineering Maintenance Assistants, to work on this upcycling initiative. Four of these tailors are dedicated full-time to creating upcycled products, collaborating with suppliers to explore innovative ways to repurpose various materials. The initiative reflects Emirates' commitment to sustainability, innovation, and giving back to the community.
Ahmed Safa, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President for Engineering, said: “At Emirates, we are committed to constantly evolving our sustainability efforts, and looking at every aspect of our products and supply chain. We knew these materials could be given a second life, because they are originally of very high quality. We challenged our team to be as creative and innovative as possible, and here we are, with our own accessories workshop in Emirates Engineering Centre! This initiative is a passion project for our team, and we are immensely proud of how it aligns with both our innovation and sustainability aims, and even better - that all proceeds will benefit worthy causes via the Emirates Airline Foundation.”
