The UAE stands at the forefront of nations embracing global standards for "healthy buildings," making it a leader in the Middle East, where the highest number of WELL-certified buildings can be found, according to a recent announcement by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI). As the global authority driving market transformation towards healthier buildings, organizations, and communities, the IWBI focuses on certifying spaces that promote health and well-being. Across the region, there is a growing commitment among companies and public sector organizations to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of their people, as noted by IWBI founder Paul Scialla. The UAE Prime Minister's Office, particularly its Dubai branch, has secured the platinum-level certification for health and safety, making it the world's first WELL-certified government ministry office.
“It demonstrates outstanding leadership while proving that investments in ‘healthy building’ strategies can spark enhanced performance and increased financial returns,” he said. “Ever since the WELL standard was adopted in the Middle East, we have seen an incredible increase in demand year-over-year for WELL’s evidence-based strategies that support the physical and mental health of organizations,” he added.
Dubai Police's buildings also feature prominently on the list, with all five, including the headquarters, receiving certification. Notably, even the jails under Dubai Police's jurisdiction have achieved a favourable health and safety rating. Numerous other public and private sector organizations in the UAE have also earned WELL certification.
Expo City Dubai, an IWBI member set to host COP28 later this year, boasts 23 certified buildings. Additionally, the Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA), Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and Nakheel have successfully achieved WELL health and safety ratings for multiple buildings. Nakheel Community Management, in particular, received recognition for 365 buildings last year.
Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) secured the WELL health and safety certification for 11 offices in 2022, while its 29 malls are registered as well. Key retail destinations in Dubai, such as JBR and City Walk, have also attained the coveted "healthy buildings" rating. Furthermore, Emaar, a global property developer, achieved the WELL health and safety rating for an impressive 218 buildings across Dubai. This growing trend underscores the UAE's commitment to fostering environments that prioritize the well-being of their occupants.
