In 2023, GCC tourists will have contributed €2.6 billion to Germany's tourism economy, a 24% increase.

Germany has underscored the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region's strategic significance as a premier tourism market. This commitment was demonstrated at a prominent media and trade event co-hosted by the German National Tourist Office (GNTO) and visitBerlin. The event emphasized the growing partnership between Germany and GCC nations, showcasing the region’s potential as a key driver of German tourism.

Showcasing Innovations in Travel

The event spotlighted several advancements in Germany's tourism landscape. These included the introduction of new flight routes, digital innovations, and a customized approach to welcoming GCC tourists. As Germany's third-largest overseas tourism market, GCC visitors play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s travel sector.

Economic Contributions of GCC Visitors

In 2023, GCC tourists contributed an impressive €2.6 billion to Germany’s economy—a 24% increase compared to 2022. This significant growth reflects the strengthening relationship between Germany and the Gulf region, as well as the allure of Germany’s diverse attractions.

Enhancing Connectivity with New Flight Routes

Germany has bolstered its travel infrastructure to meet the rising demand from GCC tourists. Condor Airlines introduced direct flights between Berlin and Dubai, while Eurowings expanded its offerings with routes from Berlin to Dubai and Jeddah, as well as new connections from Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart airports. These additions enhance accessibility, making it easier for Gulf visitors to explore Germany’s rich history and cultural diversity.

Burkhard Kieker, CEO of VisitBerlin, said: “Berlin is more accessible than ever for GCC travellers, thanks to enhanced flight connectivity to the region. These connections allow visitors from the GCC to explore Berlin's rich cultural heritage, diverse neighbourhoods, and renowned medical facilities. Our goal is to offer seamless, enriching travel experiences tailored to the unique preferences of GCC tourists, strengthening our bond with the region.”

Celebrating Berlin’s Milestones in 2025

Berlin is gearing up for major celebrations in 2025, including the 200th anniversary of Museum Island and the reopening of Peacock Island’s Lustschloss. These events, coupled with Berlin's array of modern attractions, halal-friendly dining options, and world-class healthcare facilities, solidify its position as a prime destination for GCC tourists seeking leisure and wellness experiences.

Yamina Sofo, Director of Sales and Marketing at GNTO, said: "Our approach to tourism is deeply rooted in offering diverse, immersive experiences tailored to the unique preferences of GCC travellers. Through our targeted campaigns, such as ‘Simply Feel Good’, ‘CultureLand Germany’, and ‘Tourism for All,’ we aim to highlight the breadth of Germany’s cultural and natural beauty. Each initiative reflects our commitment to inclusivity and accessibility—whether by promoting eco-friendly destinations, celebrating Germany’s rich historical landmarks, or ensuring every traveller can fully engage with our offerings. We invite GCC visitors to explore Germany’s dynamic blend of modern attractions and timeless heritage, crafted with their needs in mind for a truly enriching journey.”

Berlin: A Cultural and Inclusive Hub

Berlin’s dynamic cultural scene continues to attract GCC travellers. The city offers Michelin-starred restaurants, family-friendly activities, and historical landmarks. Its welcoming atmosphere is complemented by a thriving Muslim community, with approximately 80 mosques and prayer rooms concentrated in neighbourhoods like Kreuzberg, Wedding, and Neukölln. Iconic religious sites such as the Omar Ibn al-Khattab Mosque and the Şehitlik Mosque highlight Berlin’s respect for cultural diversity.

Pioneering Multicultural Initiatives

Berlin’s dedication to inclusivity is further demonstrated by projects like the House of One, a unique interfaith initiative offering separate prayer spaces for Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. This reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue and multiculturalism.

Introducing AI-Powered Innovations for GCC Travellers

To better connect with GCC audiences, GNTO unveiled "Emma," an AI-powered virtual influencer designed to enhance trip planning. Through her Instagram channel, @EmmaTravelsGermany, Emma provides tailored travel insights and real-time updates. This innovative tool caters to the GCC market’s growing demand for digital engagement and personalized experiences.

Leveraging AI and Open Data for Seamless Travel

Sofo added: "Emma's launch marks a significant step in our digital engagement strategy, enabling us to interact with travellers across various platforms. This innovation underscores our commitment to meeting GCC travellers' needs for more personalised, immersive travel experiences. Emma is a virtual bridge, enhancing accessibility to Germany's diverse offerings."

Emma's launch aligns with GNTO’s broader initiatives in AI and Open Data. By integrating real-time information with a user-centric approach, Germany is elevating its position as a global tourism leader. These efforts aim to provide GCC visitors with a seamless and enriching travel experience, reaffirming Germany's dedication to its valued guests from the Gulf region.
