First organisation in the region to achieve this milestone

Rixos Hotels UAE has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first entity in the region to receive certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The GSTC, renowned globally for establishing and overseeing standards in sustainable travel and tourism, has acknowledged Rixos Hotels UAE for aligning its operations with the highest social and environmental benchmarks. This recognition underscores the positive impact of Rixos Hotels UAE on local communities and the broader environment.

“At Rixos Hotels UAE, we are honoured to be at the forefront of sustainable hospitality in the region, taking a significant step towards aligning with the UAE’s visionary sustainability initiative,” said Ozgul Aktolga, country director of quality and sustainability for UAE. “This milestone reaffirms our dedication to not only providing exceptional guest experiences but also minimising our ecological footprint and enhancing the well-being of our communities.”

In a parallel move towards sustainability, Dubai Tourism has actively engaged in promoting sustainable hospitality. At the close of the previous month, Dubai Tourism introduced a novel accreditation system for hotels known as the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp. This accreditation is awarded to properties that exhibit the utmost adherence to Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing's (DET) sustainability requirements. Crafted in collaboration with Dubai's hospitality sector, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp aims to expedite efforts to empower the tourism industry in achieving its sustainability goals and supporting the UAE’s NetZero 2050 initiative.

The Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp serves as a tangible validation of a hotel's commitment to sustainability, showcasing its implementation of sustainable practices. To earn this stamp, hotels across all classifications must meet the rigorous standards outlined in DET's 19 sustainability requirements. These criteria encompass aspects such as energy and water efficiency, waste management programs, and initiatives related to staff education and engagement. The accreditation process will be overseen by a committee comprising senior industry professionals, ensuring integrity and independence. The initiative has been structured based on global best practices to uphold the highest standards in sustainable tourism.
