Practical strategies to reduce waste and create an eco-friendly future - By Naji Haddad, Vice President of EMEA at Deliverect

By 2023, 14% of food produced will have been lost and 17% will have been wasted globally. This startling statistic draws attention to both a huge economic impact and a lost chance in the struggle against environmental degradation, hunger, and poverty. Sadly, compared to other months, this number rises by 25% during Ramadan. Understanding the root reasons for food waste is crucial, but it's also critical to comprehend how it affects the environment and consider creative solutions to this problem.

Understanding the Roots of Food Waste

Two main factors contribute to food waste: inefficiencies in the manufacturing and supply chains, as well as consumer behaviour, which is particularly noticeable in the F&B industry. Waste is mostly caused by consumer behaviours including overspending, poor meal planning, and misreading date labels. The problem is further made worse by a lack of knowledge about the repercussions of food waste and the appropriate handling of leftovers. Significant food loss occurs across the production and supply chains as a result of several issues, including overproduction, inadequate storage space, ineffective harvesting techniques, and logistical difficulties. Strict quality regulations that are upheld by farmers to stores frequently destroy perfectly edible food because of minor cosmetic flaws.

The Environmental and Social Ramifications

The ramifications of food waste extend far beyond the immediate loss of sustenance. Environmentally, it contributes to greenhouse gas emissions as decomposing food in landfills releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Moreover, it signifies a squandering of resources utilized in food production, including water, land, energy, labour, and capital, consequently contributing to deforestation and biodiversity loss. Socially and economically, food waste perpetuates food insecurity, particularly affecting impoverished communities, and represents a missed opportunity to alleviate global hunger. Economically, it strains resources, impacting households and large-scale producers alike.

Addressing the Issue Head-On

Governments worldwide are putting rules in place to reduce food waste; these range from national reduction objectives to laws that forbid retailers from throwing away unsold food. Proactive measures in this respect include the 'Ne'ma' campaign in the United Arab Emirates the food waste reduction programme in Saudi Arabia, and the initiative by Saudi Arabia to launch a national program to reduce SR40 billion ($10.66 billion) in food waste by 2030. Meanwhile, grassroots activities encouraging composting programmes, communal fridges, and education campaigns are gathering momentum and enabling people to take an active part in trash reduction. Especially consumers may have a big influence by adopting thoughtful habits like meal planning, reading expiration dates, using the right storage methods, and appreciating leftovers. Contributing extra food to nonprofits helps reduce waste even further.

F&B Sector Solutions

Technological improvements can be used by people and businesses in the food and beverage industry to effectively prevent food waste. Technological advancements such as improved inventory management software, apps for redistributing extra food, and superior packaging that extends product shelf life simplify processes. Software solutions can be integrated into company systems to improve ordering procedures, provide real-time stock level monitoring, and provide insights into inventory usage.

In Conclusion

Effectively addressing food waste necessitates collaborative efforts from consumers, businesses, and governments. By comprehending its origins, and impacts, and implementing pragmatic solutions, we can substantially mitigate food waste, yielding benefits for both the environment and society at large.
