In a perfect world, universal access to high-quality and affordable healthcare would be a reality, ensuring that everyone could receive the care they need whenever and wherever necessary. However, despite significant advancements in the field of medicine, many individuals are still left without adequate healthcare.
With a diverse background encompassing work experiences in Africa, the United States, China, and her current role in Singapore, Ms. Ruth Kuguru, the Executive Director of Communications and Engagement for Novartis in the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa region, has gained first-hand insights into the challenges faced by patients and caregivers. These challenges often stem from disparities in healthcare and gaps within the healthcare system that hinder equal access.
She said: “During the pandemic, we clearly saw the impact that lack of access to even the most basic of care can have on the health of individuals, as well as society as a whole. For people living in Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, where barriers to accessing healthcare are diverse and complex, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.”
Addressing these barriers to healthcare is at the heart of the mission of the Alliance and Partnerships for Patient Innovation and Solutions (APPIS) platform. This initiative is both organized and generously funded by the global healthcare company, Novartis. Established in 2021, APPIS serves as a unifying platform, bringing together patient advocacy groups and various stakeholders from the healthcare sector.
“Patient groups play a critical role when it comes to improving patient outcomes. They are passionate in raising awareness and advocating for healthcare accessibility, which is why partnering with them is at the heart of the APPIS platform,” explained Ms Kuguru.
The accessibility of healthcare is influenced by several key factors, including the availability of services and resources to support patient care, the affordability of treatments, and the acceptability of these treatments to the patients themselves. APPIS aims to tackle these issues head-on, working towards a world where healthcare is truly accessible to all.
