EGA and GIADEC Partner for Bauxite Development in Ghana

This aims to diversify EGA's raw material sources and leverage Ghana's vast reserves, potentially boosting its aluminium production

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the world’s leading producer of premium aluminium, has entered into a strategic agreement with the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC). This partnership marks a significant step towards identifying and developing bauxite-related projects in the Republic of Ghana.

Ghana’s Abundant Bauxite Reserves Offer Growth Prospects

Ghana is home to over 900 million tonnes of bauxite reserves, spread across one major and two smaller known deposits. Despite this vast resource base, current production remains modest at approximately 1.5 million tonnes annually. However, the high quality of Ghanaian bauxite provides a strong foundation for scaling up production significantly in the future.

Focus on Infrastructure and Long-Term Collaboration

As part of the agreement, EGA and GIADEC will work together to assess opportunities for long-term bauxite offtake agreements. The collaboration will also involve evaluating the development of supporting infrastructure, including rail and port facilities, which are essential for enabling expanded production and efficient export of bauxite.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said: “This aligns well with EGA’s goal of diversifying our sources of upstream supply as we grow our metal production, including in the US as we progress our plans to develop a greenfield primary aluminium production plant as announced during the recent state visit to the UAE of President Trump. EGA is looking to double its bauxite production in the next few years and exploring multiple opportunities worldwide, and Ghana is amongst them.”
