Meta Commits 15 GW of Renewable Energy to Power AI & Data Centres

As artificial intelligence and data centre operations become central to Meta’s strategy, the company faces increasing energy requirements. Addressing these demands is crucial to sustaining growth and operational efficiency.

The Scale of Energy Consumption

According to the International Energy Agency, data centres consumed roughly 1.5% of global electricity in 2024. This underscores the substantial energy footprint of the technology sector and the urgency of sustainable practices.

Meta, as one of the world’s largest tech corporations, has prioritised reducing its environmental impact through targeted energy initiatives. Sustainability is embedded in its core operational strategy.

Net Zero Ambitions by 2030

Central to Meta’s environmental vision is achieving net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2030. The company has set ambitious targets to reduce both direct and indirect emissions.

Meta aims to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2031 relative to its 2021 baseline. Simultaneously, it intends to ensure its Scope 3 emissions do not exceed baseline levels by the same year.

Leslie Collins, Global Head of Sustainability at Meta, says: "Our sustainability team's mission is to build safe and resilient communities in our global supply chain, enable water stewardship in our operations and the watersheds where we operate and comply with applicable regulations and commitments."

Expanding Renewable Energy Capacity

By 2024, Meta-backed wind and solar initiatives are contributing over 15 GW of clean energy to the global power grid. This marks a significant move away from fossil fuels and highlights tech companies’ role in supporting renewable infrastructure.

Meta is investing in next-generation solutions to advance its net-zero goals. These include low-carbon construction materials, renewable energy adoption, clean fuels, and efficient network hardware.

Engaging Suppliers in Decarbonization

The company works closely with suppliers to reduce emissions throughout its supply chain, promoting operational decarbonization and shared responsibility for sustainability.

With AI at the heart of its operations, Meta develops infrastructure to meet both current and future energy demands. AI is integrated into every stage of data centre design and operation to optimize energy use.

Smarter Data Centre Designs

Recent Meta data centre designs achieve comparable computing capacity using less space, which lowers energy consumption per unit while reducing construction costs and timelines.

In 2024, 91% of construction waste from Meta-owned data centres was diverted from landfills, and all electricity consumption was offset by clean and renewable energy sources.

Recognized Excellence in Sustainable Facilities

Meta’s data centres have earned LEED Gold certification across 100% of its buildings, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable design and operational excellence.

Currently, Meta operates 52 LEED Gold certified data centre buildings, encompassing nearly 36 million square feet of energy-efficient infrastructure worldwide.
