Grandweld aims to achieve its ambitious goal of becoming a 100% green shipyard by the end of next year by meeting 100% of its energy needs.

Grandweld Shipyards, a prominent name in the maritime and offshore industries, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first shipbuilder in the Middle East to adopt solar energy on a large scale. Currently, the company generates 50% of its energy needs through renewable sources, following the successful implementation of Phase One of its ambitious solar panel initiative. This accomplishment highlights its dedication to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Strategy 2050.

Advancing Sustainability in Maritime Operations

The solar energy project, closely aligned with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) clean energy vision, has positioned Grandweld as a leader in promoting sustainability within the regional maritime sector. With a current solar production capacity of 569 kWp, the initiative powers half of the company’s energy needs for both office operations and ship construction processes, setting a high standard for sustainable practices in the industry.

Ambition to Become a Fully Green Shipyard

Grandweld Shipyards is on track to achieve its bold target of becoming a 100% green shipyard by the end of next year. By fully transitioning to renewable energy sources, the company aims to redefine sustainability benchmarks in shipbuilding and establish itself as a role model for environmentally conscious industrial practices.

Jamal Abki, General Manager of Grandweld Shipyards, commented: “We prioritise sustainability in every aspect of our operations. In alignment with the UAE’s vision to shift towards clean and renewable energy, this solar energy initiative highlights our unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation. As the first shipbuilding company in the Middle East to adopt renewable energy on this large scale, we are pleased to lead the change in creating a cleaner, greener future for the maritime industry. We encourage other companies in the industry to follow us and contribute to a sustainable world.”

Looking Ahead: Contributing to the UAE’s Energy Goals

As part of the next phase of this transformative project, Grandweld plans to exceed its internal energy requirements and contribute surplus energy to the UAE’s broader renewable energy objectives. This effort reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the nation’s vision for a sustainable future.

Innovative Energy-Efficient Features

Grandweld’s sustainability efforts extend beyond solar power. The shipyard integrates advanced energy-efficient systems, including light-sensitive building technologies, to minimize environmental impact. These eco-friendly practices are complemented by adherence to green construction principles, which earned the company Leed Gold Membership from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2012.

Shaping a Sustainable Future for Maritime

By championing renewable energy and sustainable initiatives, Grandweld Shipyards is setting new industry standards while contributing to global environmental preservation. Phase Two of the solar energy project, currently underway, is expected to elevate the company’s renewable energy capacity to 1.3 MW by next year. This milestone will further reinforce Grandweld’s commitment to green energy and sustainability in the shipbuilding industry.
