The Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), the largest arbitration institution in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA), played an instrumental role in this year’s Dubai Arbitration Week (DAW). This event saw a record attendance of 1,500 participants, including legal professionals, practitioners, and industry stakeholders from all over the world.
Strategic Support and Organizational Contributions
DIAC was a key strategic partner for the DAW organizing committee, offering support in the planning, communication, and overall execution of the event. With 145 events held, this year’s Dubai Arbitration Week became the largest in its history. Notable members of the DAW Committee include DIAC’s Robert Stephen and Ritta Saoud, along with other respected experts in dispute resolution such as Karim Nassif, Dr. Mahmood Hussain, Michelle Nelson, Nassif Boumalhab, Sami Tannous, and Sara Koleilat-Aranjo.
Furthermore, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and DIAC co-hosted a conference with the topic "Shaping the future of dispute resolution – how technology is changing arbitration." Attended by more than 350 solicitors, practitioners, arbitration experts, and interested parties, the event explored how technology is changing the legal process. The most recent technical advancements in arbitration were covered by two expert panels, which also covered how parties, arbitrators, counsel, and arbitral institutions are using technology to ensure fair, efficient, and effective arbitration.
Jehad Kazim, Executive Director of DIAC said, “Dubai Arbitration Week has once again highlighted DIAC’s commitment to excellence in dispute resolution. This year’s record-breaking participation underscores Dubai’s status as a global hub for dispute resolution, aligning with the D33 Agenda to drive business and economic growth. We are grateful for the valuable contributions of the Dubai Arbitration Week Organising Committee members, whose dedication delivered an impactful week full of thought-provoking discussions.”
Continued Growth and Success
DIAC’s presence in the arbitration sector continues to grow, as reflected in its 2023 Annual Report. This marks the institution's sixth consecutive year of growth, with an increase in case volume and team expansion. In 2023 alone, DIAC recorded 355 new cases, reflecting a 4.4% rise from the previous year. The total amount in dispute reached over AED 5.5 billion (US$1.497 billion), with sectors such as construction, real estate, banking, logistics, tourism, media, and technology benefiting from DIAC’s expertise.
Advancing Dubai’s Global Arbitration Standing
As the leading arbitration body in MEASA, DIAC plays a crucial role in reinforcing Dubai’s standing as a global arbitration hub. By supporting prestigious events like Dubai Arbitration Week, DIAC helps enhance the city’s legal framework, boosts investor confidence, and contributes significantly to the region’s economic development.
